7 p.m. on FOX So You Think You Can Dance The contestants are younger than ever as this competition starts Season 13 with “The Next Generation: Audition No. 1” — and, indeed, the entrants are between the ages of 8 and 13. Do not mistake youth for not being able to bust moves, as host Cat Deeley, pictured, and judges Paula Abdul, Jason Derulo and Nigel Lythgoe (now joined by 13-year-old judge Maddie Ziegler) are destined to learn weekly. Those who make the Top 10 will be partnered with a series “All-Star.”

7 p.m. on The CW Movie: Memorial Day The masterful actor James Cromwell (“Babe,” “The Sum of All Fears”) shares a role with his son John in this 2011 drama. James plays the older incarnation of a World War II soldier who never has discussed his military experience since actually serving — until he strikes a deal with his grandson (a part also split between two actors, Jonathan Bennett and Jackson Bond) to relate the stories behind three of his wartime mementos.

7 p.m. on History Channel Roots This new four-night miniseries adaptation of Alex Haley’s 1976 bestseller, also airing on A&E Network, Lifetime and LMN, opens in 18th century Africa, where Kunta Kinte (Malachi Kirby), first son of an esteemed Mandinka family, is kidnapped and sold to British slavers. Arriving in Maryland, he is bought by Virginia planter John Waller (James Purefoy) and turned over to another slave, Fiddler (Forest Whitaker), for training.

9 p.m. on CBS Person of Interest Echoing the cult-classic movie ”Assault on Precinct 13,” the new episode “Sotto Voce” finds Reese and Finch (Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson) trapped in their own environs. Along with the latest person of interest, they’re cornered by the criminal kingpin known only as “The Voice” — who uses armed gang members as deputies in keeping the targets pinned down. Enrico Colantoni continues his guest role.

9 p.m. on ABC Mistresses The fourth season of the guilty-pleasure drama series begins a year from where the saga left off, as “The New Girls” finds Joss (Jes Macallan) testifying in a trial over recent events. Harry’s (Brett Tucker) return makes things better for her, but only marginally. Jennifer Esposito has left the show’s cast, but Jerry O’Connell joins it for this latest round as both an actor and a director.
