Logwood is latest Lobo to leave

- By Will Webber

Another day, another domino. For the third time in a week, University of New Mexico men’s basketball coach Craig Neal had to say goodbye to one of his players. On Monday, it was junior shooting guard Sam Logwood who announced he would no longer be a Lobo, doing so on his Twitter account about half an hour before UNM issued a press release mentioning the transaction.

“I wont [sic] be returning next year but thank you New Mexico,” Logwood wrote on his Twitter account. “I appreciate you all. It was a true blessing to be able to play for the Lobos.”

A highly touted 6-foot-7 wing who came to UNM from Indianapolis high school La Lumiere, Logwood has one year of eligibility remaining and will seek to finish his college career playing for another school. He must sit out one year as a redshirt transfer but will be eligible for a senior season.

“We support Sam in this decision and wish him nothing but the best,” Neal said in a prepared statement circulated to the media by UNM. “He was a pleasure to have in our program and he will be missed. He will always be a part of our Lobo family.”

Logwood started 16 games as a true freshman in the 2014-15 season and all 32 games as a sophomore. He was in the starting lineup for the first nine games this past season but a prolonged shooting slump coupled with the emergence of Dane Kuiper at that same position cut into his playing time.

He lost his starting job to Kuiper in mid-December during a nine-game stretch in which he was just 9-for-39 from the field. He appeared in 30 games this season, averaging 7.3 points and 3.5 rebounds, totals bolstered by a strong finish in which

he scored double figures in five of his final eight games after reemerging as a starter.

He had a career-high 20 points in the season opener but went into a tailspin starting with a Nov. 27 loss to Dayton. He was held to single digits in 11 of his next 12 games and finished the year having made two or fewer field goals in 17 games.

Logwood’s exit follows on the footsteps of early departures by junior Elijah Brown and sophomore Anthony Mathis, two players who announced they were transferring last week.

Barring any more players leaving, the Lobos will be short five players from this past season, four of whom were key contributors. Also gone are seniors Tim Williams and Obij Aget, the team’s two starters in the low post.

The team has already signed incoming recruits Poor BearChandler and Chris Sodom, a pair of low-post players to help offset the losses of Williams and Aget. They’ve also signed center Mike Parks and gotten a commitment from point guard Quinn Clinton.
