Man suspected of sixth DWI arrested

-

Santa Fe police arrested a 64-year-old man Monday night on suspicion of his sixth DWI offense after a woman reported that he had tried to break into her vehicle, according to a court document.

Adolfo Melara also is charged with driving on a revoked license and having an open container of alcohol, according to the criminal complaint, filed Tuesday in the Santa Fe County Magistrate Court.

At about 10 p.m. Monday, the court document says, a woman told an emergency dispatcher that a man had tried to break into her car near Fifth and Hopewell streets, and had left blood all over it. Police who arrived on the scene later determined that Melara had gotten out of his own vehicle and fell to the ground, cutting open his hands, and then tried to get inside the woman’s vehicle, which was parked nearby, the document says.

Police found eight vodka “shooters” or miniatures at the scene, according to the statement of probable cause, filed by Officer Trace Evridge.

State court records show that Malara convicted of DWI in 2004 and 2007, and another DWI charge against him was dismissed last month in Magistrate Court because of lack of prosecution.

Assistant District Attorney Ihsan Ahmed filed a motion Tuesday in the state First District Court that says Melara was first convicted of DWI in 1998 and has been arrested 10 times on suspicion of the charge. In his motion, Ihsan is asking a judge to hold Melara without bond.

A lawyer was not listed for Melara, who is being held in the Santa Fe County jail.
