From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

Sept. 3, 1917: Washington, D.C., Sept. 3 — There will be no separate Spanish-American regiment formed in New Mexico for service in the war with Germany. This much was definitely and finally decided at a recent conference held with Secretary of War Baker by Congressman W.B. Walton, Senator A.A. Jones, Adjutant General James Baca and Colonel J.W. Willson, superintendent of the New Mexico Military Institute.

At the same time it was decided with equal definiteness and finally, that special attention will be given to the problem of the non-English speaking Spanish-American troops, who are called to the colors and that everything possible will be done to increase their efficiency as soldiers and make their situation to come as pleasant as possible.

Sept. 3, 1967: The State Tax Commission is moving into a realm of taxation which is bound to cause some ripples throughout New Mexico — taxation of churchowned property.

There is little doubt millions of dollars worth of church-owned property that should be on the property tax rolls, is not, in the view of Tax Commission officials.

Disputes are almost certain to arise, and they likely will be resolved in the New Mexico Supreme Court.

Sept. 3, 1992: Some Santa Fe bars were recently selling special T-shirts that were supposed to be good for free drinks, but anyone who bought one may have been taken to the cleaners.

The state Alcohol and Gaming Division notified the bars that the T-shirt promotion was illegal. Wearers of the shirts were to get free drinks at 16 bars and restaurants whose names were listed on the shirts.
