The past 100 years

From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

Sept. 5, 1917: Albuquerque — Bernalillo county’s first increment of the 193 conscripted soldiers it must furnish to the army is on its way to Fort Riley, Kansas. The six men who form the vanguard of the [group] left yesterday on train No. 10.

The six are Howard E. Livingston, C.H. Parsons, R.D. Johnson, O.L. Padof, Gerald V.Smith and Frank P. Sanches. Livingston was placed in command of the party by the draft board, when final instructions were given.

Sept. 5, 1967: A total of 10,499 students had registered, as of Friday, to attend Santa Fe Public Schools this year, about 400 less than predicted, and only about 100 more than last year.

But Supt. C.C. Capshaw said this morning he expects the “fiesta crop” to add 200-300 more students by the end of the week, bringing the system within 100 students of the projected 10,899.

“I think today’s enrollment,” he added, “will give us a trend. Right now it looks like we may have to do some shifting from Larragoite and Wood Gormley,” the two most overcrowded elementary schools.

Sept. 5, 1992: Daniel J. Martinez, accused of raping a Santa Fe woman and killing a good Samaritan who heard the woman’s screams, was arrested early Friday after police traced a telephone call made from a southern California hotel room.

“I let him make a phone call from my apartment last night,” said Paul Toplak, manager of the Pacino Hotel in Covina, Calif. “He said he was calling his wife and daughter. The next thing I knew the police were here. They said they’d traced the call to my phone.”

The arrest ended a four-week search for Martinez, who has been wanted since Aug. 8.
