Wind helps Lady Dragons to 2-1 win over Robertson
Sometimes, the Monte del Sol Lady Dragons worry if they have a girls soccer match on their schedule.
Last week brought some unusual circumstances for Monte del Sol. It rescheduled Thursday’s nondistrict match against Capital when head coach India Nixon learned about it that day. Then the Lady Dragons didn’t know if Las Vegas Robertson was going to show up on a cool, cloudy Saturday morning for a District 2-1A/4A match at the Municipal Recreation Complex rugby field.
“It was like, 10:15 [a.m.], and they were like, ‘Are they coming?’ ” Nixon said with a laugh. “They were nervous, but I said, ‘Yes, they’re coming, but remember they’re traveling by bus.’ ”
The waiting was worth it as Adeline Chacon scored two second-half goals for a 2-1 win.
Nixon credited a heady decision by her team captains to play into the wind to start the match for giving the Lady Dragons (2-3 overall, 1-1 in 2-1A/4A) an advantage in the second half.
“The wind was so strong, [Monte del Sol goalkeeper Ali Castillo] couldn’t punt the ball,” Nixon said.
That wasn’t an issue in the second half. Chacon tied the score at 1-all with a goal off a corner kick. Later in the half, she took advantage of a bobbled ball by the Lady Cardinals goalkeeper and knocked into the net for the match-winner.
The district season kicks into high gear this week, as Monte del Sol plays three 2-1A/4A matches against Taos, Santa Fe Prep and Pojoaque Valley. Robertson fell to 6-5, 0-2.
LAS CRUCES CENTENNIAL 2, ST. MICHAEL’S 0
Another day, another 2-0 loss. The Lady Horsemen went 0-2 on the day as the Class 6A Lady Hawks beat them in the morning consolation match of the Sandia Prep Tournament. That followed a 2-0 loss to the host Lady Sundevils on Friday in which Lady Horsemen goalkeeper Megan Burnham injured her back in the second half. St. Michael’s (7-4) returns to the field Thursday for a nondistrict tilt against Santa Fe High.
BOYS SOCCER MONTE DEL SOL 1, TIERRA ENCANTADA 0
Moises Cerda has garnered a lot of attention from opposing teams, and for good reason. The freshman reached double figures in goals as his 10th of the season, off a cross from Joel Puentes. It was the only time the ball penetrated the back of the goal in a nondistrict match at the MRC rugby field.
After that, the Dragons’ defense did its part to keep the Alacranes (2-4) off the scoreboard.
“It was a really great team effort,” Monte del Sol head coach Fritz Rothdach said. “I was very proud of my team today, and Tierra Encantada has a very good soccer team.”
For the first time this season, Monte del Sol inched over the .500 mark with a 5-4-1 record.
ABQ. ST. PIUS X 2, CAPITAL 0
The Sartans became just the third team this season to score on the Jaguars. It’s just that Capital had no answer for a pair of goals in the first half of a nondistrict match at Jaguar Field.
The Jaguars fall to 10-2-1 on the season, while St. Pius improved to 4-3-3.
