No. 22 SDSU holds off Air Force, 28-24

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Rashaad Penny scored three times, including a 53-yard scamper with 5:39 remaining, and No. 22 San Diego State held off Air Force 28-24 on Saturday night in a game that was delayed 88 minutes by lightning.

Penny, the nation’s leading rusher entering the game, struggled early in the soggy conditions. But he finally found some running room as the Aztecs (4-0, 1-0 Mountain West) began their quest to capture a third straight conference title.

UTAH STATE 61, SAN JOSE STATE 10

In San Jose, Calif., Kent Myers threw for 181 yards and two scores and Utah State piled up 318 yards rushing and beat San Jose State in the conference opener for both teams. After throwing a pick on the Aggies first drive, Myers bounced back to lead a 7-play, 61-yard drive that ended when LaJuan Hunt ran for a 29-yard touchdown.

NO. 18 WASHINGTON STATE 45, NEVADA 7

In Pullman, Wash., Luke Falk threw five touchdown passes, and No. 18 Washington State beat Nevada for the team’s best start in 16 years.

Washington State (4-0), which opened the 2001 season by winning its first seven games, piled up 560 yards of offense and five sacks.

Nevada was held to just 151 total yards as the Wolf Pack (0-4) fell to 0-17 on the road against opponents in the Top 25.

NO. 10 OHIO STATE 54, UNLV 21

In Columbus, Ohio, J.T. Barrett threw touchdown passes to five receivers in the first half, and No. 10 Ohio State cruised over Nevada-Las Vegas.

INSTATE NEW MEXICO STATE 41, UTEP 14

In Las Cruces, Tyler Rogers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, Larry Rose III had 17 carries for 144 yards and two scores and New Mexico State beat UTEP.

Rogers completed 26 of 43 passes for 283 yards — including a 2-yard touchdown to Rose — and scored on a 4-yard run and Shamad Lomax had three first-half intercepti­ons for New Mexico State (2-2).

Rose, immediatel­y following Lomax’s first pick, went 40 yards to open the scoring with 9:45 left in the first quarter. UTEP (0-4) answered with a 12-play, 81-yard drive capped by Ryan Metz’s 5-yard touchdown run. After the Miners downed a punt at the 3, Rose had six carries for 65 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown that capped a 15-play drive and provided the first of 31-straight New Mexico State points.
