Martinez in D.C. to meet with Trump administration

-

Gov. Susana Martinez is in Washington, D.C., to meet with officials in President Donald Trump’s administration, according to her office.

But a spokesman for the governor would not say Wednesday with whom she is meeting.

The trip, which began Wednesday, is official business. The state government is paying for her travel.

The Governor’s Office did not respond to questions about her itinerary or general plans, however.

A spokesman for Martinez said she will return to New Mexico on Friday.

The governor traveled to the Washington, D.C., area just last week to campaign for Ed Gillespie, the Republican candidate for governor of Virginia. Taxpayers did not cover the cost of that trip.

Martinez clashed with Trump during his campaign. But since he took office, Martinez has been conciliatory, even cheering Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education.

The governor’s official calendar shows a few meetings with Trump administration officials over the last year. Martinez met in February with Trump, the first lady, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen. The calendar also shows a phone call with the White House in March, as well as another telephone call later that month with Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and Seema Verma, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In August, she spoke by phone with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.
