‘The Night Shift’ has ended

-

Q: I heard that “The Night Shift” won’t be back. Is that true? – Ellen Frost, via e-mail

A: It is. After four seasons (most of them airing in summer), NBC decided not to order more of the medical drama – effectively ending its run, though the show has been popular in international sales to foreign networks. The cancellation likely had much to do with the abundance of medical shows NBC has on its plate now, including “Chicago Med” (which returns Nov. 21) and several more that are being developed for next season. Had it stayed on in the summer, “The Night Shift” probably wouldn’t have conflicted with those, but it’s presumably a matter of where to place resources within the same genre. Of the “Night Shift” stars, we’d anticipate that Jill Flint will be seen again soon, via her recurring guest role on CBS’ “Bull” that saw her return in the current season’s premiere of that series.

Q: I’ve seen Morgan Freeman on “Madam Secretary” several times. Does he have a connection to the show other than acting? – Kathy Banner, Schaumburg, Ill.

A: He certainly does. You’ll see him listed as one of the executive producers of the CBS drama in its weekly credits, and he also has directed the episodes in which he has appeared as the chief justice of the Supreme Court – which typically have been the opening episodes of each season of the show beyond the first one.
