St. Mike’s 79 Bosque 46

With football season over, the St. Michael’s boys basketball team had a full complement of players for the first time Tuesday night in Albuquerque.

The fortified Horsemen roster didn’t disappoint in a 79-46 rout at Bosque. St. Michael’s improves to 2-0 heading into Friday’s nondistrict game at Los Alamos.

It’s part of a seven-game stretch the Horsemen will play before getting their first home game on Dec. 19 against Capital.

Jevon Montoya led the way Tuesday with 15 points. Thomas Wood added 13 and Victor Otero 11 as St. Michael’s led 19-12 after one quarter and 33-20 at the break.

Things got out of hand in the third quarter when Bosque had several turnovers against the Horsemen pressure defense. It led to a 24-12 run that only got worse in the fourth quarter.

“This team is conditioned and all they’ve been doing lately is running,” said Horsemen head coach David Rodriguez. “All I can say is we were left a solid foundation from [previous head coach] Ron Geyer and it’s because of that foundation that we’re able to do so many of the things I want to run.”

Lincoln Barker added eight points for St. Michael’s, getting six of those points in the second half. Antonio Gabaldon added seven. Both players joined the team after the school’s football team was eliminated from the state playoffs less than two weeks ago.

Alex Schandelwein and Lucas Gonzales each had half a dozen points while Dominic Morgan had seven. The Horsemen only had three 3-pointers, meaning most of their points came within about 10 feet of the rim.

Bosque (0-4) was led by Eli Davidson’s 14 points. Silas Landon had 10, with six of those coming from the free throw line in the first half.
