SFHS advances 4, Capital has 3 in semifinals

Los Alamos, the District 2-5A champion, sits in sixth place with top seed Devin Atencio reaching the semifinals at 106.

As for Robertson, it is in third place with 54 points, just 7.5 points behind Cobre for second. The Cardinals have Justin Salazar left at 113, Andrew Trujillo is in the semis at 120, Jonathan Trujillo is going for a second straight state title at 145, Tristan Trujillo will take on Albuquerqu­e Foothill’s Victor Barron in a 160 semifinal and Darian Duran is among the final four left at 195.

St. Michael’s only brought six wrestlers, but three of them reached the semifinals. Aside from Sam Baca at 152, Dominic Smith takes on Zachary Batie in a morning semifinal, while Tayo Regenold takes on No. 1 Isaiah Valverde of Tucumcari in a 285 semifinal.

Pojoaque Valley got a pair of Elks into the semifinals, with Javier Tapia in line for a third state title as he takes on Isias Kamplain of Moriarty in a 170 semi. On the opposite side of the bracket is Taos’ Estevan Valerio, who will wrestle Nathaniel Lucero in a 2-vs-3 matchup.

Josh Roybal is the other Pojoaque wrestler in the semis, as he will go against Taos’ Jessie Ayala, the top seed at 220.

West Las Vegas eighth-grader Tristian Martinez is making a February charge, as he improved to 4-0 and reaching the 113 semifinals with a 17-0 technical fall win over Newcomb’s Hector Thompson.

This year was the first year for a girls championsh­ip, and Los Alamos’ Gloria Ramos reached the semifinals before losing to Albuquerqu­e Sandia’s Selvi Gallegos 6-2 at 121. She will face Celi Kamplain in a consolatio­n semifinal. Meanwhile, Taos’ Elisha Duran will face off against Gallegos for the state title.

The girls championsh­ip and consolatio­n championsh­ips are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, while the boys finals are set for 4:30 p.m.
