The New Mexican in the coming months will offer complete coverage of the candidates, their views and other political developments leading up to the August primary election and the November election.

March 24, 1993: County commissioners on Monday approved regulations that will make it more difficult than ever for companies to mine precious minerals such as gold and silver in Santa Fe County.
The five commissioners unanimously approved amendments to mining laws that will let the county:
Shut down mining operations if the public welfare is endangered.
Demand financial assurances from mining companies that they will return mined areas to a condition resembling their natural state.
Deny an application to mine based on a company’s past performance. For instance, if a company has a history of damaging the environment in other states, an application to mine in Santa Fe County could be denied out of hand.
