All-Star Extravagan­za begins today

The smorgasbor­d of events that is the New Mexico High School Coaches Associatio­n AllStar Extravagan­za begins Thursday in Albuquerqu­e.

Volleyball starts the Extravagan­za off with the Class 1A/2A, 3A/4A and 5A/6A matches at Albuquerqu­e La Cueva. The schedule gets hectic after that.

Starting with the 6-man/8-man/ 2A football game at NUSENDA Community Stadium at 10 a.m., 13 events will take place Friday, ending with the 5A/6A girls basketball and football games, as well as the 1A-4A softball game that all start at 8 p.m.

Also on the agenda are softball and baseball home run derbies at Lobo Field and Santa Ana Star Field at UNM’s south campus.

Saturday has nine events, culminatin­g with the 5A/6A boys basketball game at Albuquerqu­e High School.

The only games that will not be in Albuquerqu­e involve 5A/6A baseball, which will be at the Field of Dreams Complex in Las Cruces on Friday and Saturday. Santa Fe High’s Izaiah Apodaca will represent the North squad for the three-game series. The opener is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, with a Saturday doublehead­er that starts at noon.

According to the rosters on the NMHSCA site, Northern New Mexico will be represente­d in every game or match except for 5A/6A boys and girls basketball, 5A/6a softball and 5A/6A football.

A few northern athletes will be performing double duty, as they play in two games instead of just one. Robertson’s Arjay Ortiz and Antonio Gabaldon of St. Michael’s will play in the

3A/4A boys basketball and football games, while Robertson’s Brandelyn Fulgenzi will participat­e in 3A/4A volleyball and

all-star tennis. Escalante’s Sarah Hurd will play in the 1A/2A volleyball and girls basketball games.
