Hit the road for food, drink and fun on cable and broadcast TV
It’s officially the summer travel season and Americans will be hitting the road to take in all the sights, sounds and tastes this country has to offer, rising gas prices be darned.
If you happen to be one of them, a number of culinary shows on broadcast and basic cable this week have tips on where to find to find the best eats – with or without breaking the vacation travel budget.
Such is the case with the Monday, June 11, episode of Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food,” which brings host Casey Webb to Baltimore to experience an out-of-this-world diner, dive right into a crab feast and take in a pho (noodle bowl) fight. Followed by a hot shower.
Seafood is also on tap in the Saturday, June 16 (check local listings), edition of PBS’ “Weekends With Yankee,” as co-host Amy Traverso samples what’s on the menu at a clambake at Maine’s Acadia National Park, then creates a stovetop version of it in her test kitchen. Be sure to pay attention and take notes.
If seafood on the fly is your thing, Cooking Channel’s “Carnival Eats” on Thursday, June 14, finds host Noah Cappe trying out what’s available from the bounty of the sea at various fairgrounds. Later that night on Cooking, Katie Lee chows down in the Bahamas on conch salad as fresh as you can have it on “Beach Bites.”
For beef eaters in the crowd, there is the Tuesday, June 12, episode of his Travel series “The Zimmern List,” in which host Andrew Zimmern visits Atlanta, a city of many food influences, to try what is reputed to be one of the best burgers in America, along with Southern staples and Korean cuisine. Consider your culinary horizons expanded. Roger Mooking is also on the hunt for meat, preferably cooked over flame, in his Cooking series “Man Fire Food,” where in the Wednesday, June 13, episode he heads to Southern California to check out barbecue sold out of a pop-up backyard operation in East Los Angeles and another pop-up joint in a Calabasas parking lot. Unpretentious, yet fine dining.
Those who like a good beer now and again will want to check out the Tuesday edition of Viceland’s “Beerland,” in which host Meg Gill checks out the craft beer scene in Pittsburgh. And wine drinkers will want to tune in to the Wednesday episode of Ovation’s “The Wine Show,” where hosts and actors Matthew Goode and Matthew Rhys head to the Italian city of Verona, the setting of “Romeo & Juliet,” to practice their new sommelier skills on two unsuspecting lovers.
