A smooth transition back to school

-

Shifting back into the structured rhythm of school can be rocky for some children and for parents, too. Here are a few tips for making this year’s back-to-school transition smooth and fun.

Know your child’s transition style: Some of us jump off the dock into the water; others test the temperature with their big toe and then slowly ease in. Most of us are in the middle. Understanding your child’s transition style can assist you in knowing how to best prepare for the return to school. Those who transition slowly or hesitantly will benefit from earlier and more detailed preparation.

Make it familiar: Introduce your child to the teacher, classroom and school in advance. Arrange a gettogether with classmates before school starts, meeting up for pizza or for a fun afternoon at the park. Reconnecting early will ease some of the stress that comes with the first day of school.

Make shopping fun: Involve your child in back-to-school shopping. Have them make the lists of needed supplies. Have them make decisions on shoes, clothes and backpacks. The more powerful they feel, the more at ease they become. Make shopping special by including lunch at one of their favorite restaurants or a picnic at a favorite spot. This can become one of your annual rituals for welcoming the school year. Plan to do your shopping early so that you have the time and energy to enjoy it. Maggie Macaulay, M.S.
