EDUCATION STANDOUTS
Dail Chapman recently received her Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of California-Irvine. She also was awarded the Edward Steinhous Teaching Award. She will be teaching a class in biology this summer at the university as the professor.
Chapman attended Wood Gormley Elementary School and graduated from Santa Fe Prep in 2009. She was a featured dancer at Moving People Dance Co. and studied piano. She will be doing post-doctoral work at Stanford University this fall.

The New Mexico Music Educators Association executive board has awarded Los Alamos Public Schools the 2019 School District Award of Distinction. In addition, music teacher Kim
LeTellier received the Dr. John Batcheller Elementary Award for excellence in music education at the elementary level.
The Award of Distinction is given by the association in recognition of school districts that are outstanding leaders in support of music in their schools. LeTellier teaches music to all K-6 students at Chamisa Elementary School and conducts two band ensembles. She also founded and directs the Chamisa Sing-Sations and the hand chime group called the Chamisa Chime-Ringers.
The Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation awarded 20 scholarships, each worth $1,500, to Northern New Mexico students in three categories. New in 2018, the Abiquiú Land Grant-Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Scholarship is specifically designated for descendants of an Abiquiú Land Grant family. Marisa-Ann Lopez of Santa Fe, who is studying culinary arts at Santa Fe Community College, is the inaugural recipient of this award.
Three Native American students were recipients of 2018 Northern New Mexico Tribal Business Scholarships in support of bachelor’s degree studies in business-related fields.
The winners are Jerome Garcia of Cochiti Pueblo, studying accounting and business administration at the University of New Mexico; James Naranjo of Santa Clara Pueblo, studying finance at New Mexico State University, and Ray Roberson of the San Felipe Pueblo, studying business administration with a concentration in finance at Whittier College.
The second round of Regional College/ Returning Student Scholarships in 2018 were given to 16 nontraditional students pursuing a two-year degree or certification after a significant gap in formal education. Winners are:

Jessica Snow, a New Mexico Highlands University biology professor, received an American Heart Association grant for research aimed at shedding new light on the role estrogen plays in pulmonary hypertension.
Elsebeth Kirby of Santa Fe, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2020, has earned the spring 2018 Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. Kirby is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut. Kirby’s major is sociology. Colgate is in Hamilton, N.Y.
Jim Abreu, a former School of Education dean at New Mexico Highlands University, received the Administrator of the Year award from the New Mexico Coalition of Educational Leaders.
