St. Mike’s boys soccer beats SFHS
Round 2 went to the team in blue and white Friday.
Santa Fe High and St. Michael’s boys soccer teams dueled for the second time in the three days and the Horsemen got the upper hand with a 3-2 win in the opening match of Taos’ Sangre de Cristo Classic at Eco Park.
The Horsemen (2-1) scored in the 30th minute when Berkeley Reynolds found Justice Johnson on a through-ball. The Demons (1-1) tied it four minutes into the second half, but St. Michael’s responded with a goal from Wesley Graham two minutes later off a corner kick from Reynolds for a 2-1 lead.
Graham added a second goal with an assist from Reynolds for a 3-1 lead before Santa Fe High responded with a goal to cut the margin to one. After that, the defense for St. Michael’s stood tall. Goalkeeper Isaiah Vigil had a pair of saves that were crucial in preserving the win.
“When you have somebody like that who can make at least one good save a [match] for you, that’s good,” Horsemen head coach Mike Feldewert said.
“He made a number of saves, but he had two good ones for us.”
St. Michael’s took the rest of the day off and returns to play Saturday with a match against Miyamura at 11 a.m. and Pojoaque Valley at 3 p.m. The Horsemen beat the Elks, 5-1, at home Monday.
VOLLEYBALL
Santa Fe Waldorf Wolf Tournament: The host Lady Wolves breezed through pool play in Christian Life Academy, going 6-0 to earn the top seed for Saturday morning’s semifinal action. Waldorf will take on Monte del Sol, which did not win a pool-play match, in the second semifinal at 11 a.m. No. 2 McCurdy, which was 4-2, takes on To’hajiilee in the opening semifinal match at 9:30 a.m.
The third place match will pit the semifinals losers at 1:30 p.m., and the championship is at 3 p.m.
