Two adults face charges af­ter boy said they beat him

Santa Fe po­lice this week ar­rested Baikal Har­ris, 34, and Christina Cas­tro, 44, on sus­pi­cion of child abuse af­ter a boy told a state child wel­fare worker they both had beaten him.

Ac­cord­ing to ar­rest war­rant af­fi­davits, the boy ac­cused Har­ris, a rel­a­tive, of beat­ing him re­peat­edly over the years.

Dur­ing an in­ter­view with the so­cial worker at So­lace Cri­sis Treat­ment Cen­ter, the af­fi­davits say, the boy said Har­ris be­came up­set Oct. 4 and knocked him to the ground and be­gan to choke him. The boy, in tears, said he was stran­gled for 9 to 13 sec­onds and thought he was go­ing to die.

Af­ter the at­tack, the boy said, Har­ris told him, “Some­one should have stran­gled you a long time ago.”

Ac­cord­ing to the af­fi­davits, the boy said Har­ris had beaten him in the past and that Cas­tro also had hit him.

Cas­tro, reached by phone Fri­day, said she and Har­ris are mar­ried.

“We’re both pro­fes­sion­als. I’m a pro­fes­sional, and these charges are go­ing to be dealt with,” Cas­tro said. “I’m con­fi­dent that my name will be cleared, as

well as my hus­band’s.” Har­ris de­clined to com­ment. The boy’s mother told po­lice the state Chil­dren, Youth and Fam­i­lies De­part­ment has been con­tacted mul­ti­ple times about the boy’s abuse, the af­fi­davits say.

Har­ris is fac­ing four charges of felony child abuse for in­ci­dents be­tween 2012-18, court doc­u­ments show. A judge or­dered him to be re­leased from jail ear­lier this week on an un­se­cured bond of $5,000 and a GPS mon­i­tor to make sure he has no con­tact with the boy.

Cas­tro, who has a Taos address, is fac­ing one charge of child abuse, ac­cord­ing to court doc­u­ments. She also was or­dered re­leased from jail an un­se­cured bond and with a GPS mon­i­tor.

Nei­ther has en­tered a plea re­lated to the charges, and both are due back in court in early Novem­ber.
