Early deficit fires up Dragons

Santa Fe New Mexican - - SPORTS -

Nothing can sober up a soccer team better than a 2-0 deficit.

The Monte del Sol Dragons faced that in the opening minutes Friday of a District 1-1A/3A boys soccer match at Moreno Valley in Angel Fire, but all it did was wake them up. The Dragons responded by outscoring the Timberwolves for a 7-3 win. That keeps Monte del Sol (9-3-1 overall) atop the district at 6-0 and sets up a matchup with Tierra Encantada on Oct. 18 that could determine the district champion and an automatic spot in the Class 1A/3A State Tournament.

It almost looked like the Dragons were going to lose their district lead against Moreno Valley.

“It was like, ‘What is going on?’ ” Monte del Sol head coach Fritz Rothdach said.

Monte del Sol wasn’t helped by the absence of Pedro Chavez, who Rothdach elected to sit as he dealt with a shoulder injury. But the Dragons battled back with a single goal each from Joel Puentes and Clay Arizmendi to tie the score at the half. Then came a five-goal outburst in the second half, highlighted by a pair of goals by Axel Locoya and Brandon Quintero.

“Other people had to pick up the slack,” Rothdach said. “That was good. For me as a coach, I see that as a positive.”
