The new Bohemian Rhapsody movie takes us behind the music and into the life of the 1970s and ’80s rock group Queen.

There are plenty of strong elements in this movie, as well as some weak ones. The pacing is great, the acting is fantastic and Rami Malek’s performance as lead singer Freddie Mercury is mind-blowing. The greatest thing about this film, though, is seeing our favorite Queen songs being created. These scenes are the ones that make this movie worth watching. not This much movie character isn’t perfect, development though. between There is the band members, and the movie skips some parts in Queen’s timeline that could have gone toward developing those characters. We all know that the late Mercury was Queen, in many ways, and thus is really Freddie Mercury’s story, but I would still have liked to see more of the other members fleshed out so we understand who they are and what their motivations are. I walked out of the theater not knowing anything about them besides their ability to play instruments.

The development between Freddie Mercury and his wife, Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton), however, is very interesting to see and one of the strongest elements of this film. You can really feel how much Freddie struggles with his love for Mary and his passion for men.

I’d still recommend this film to any Queen fan, old or new. There’s a lot here for everybody, and seeing this band of misfits come together to become worldwide rock stars is really special. A lot of critics have not liked the film, but it grossed $50 million in its opening weekend — a sign that Queen fans are still hungry for more. Bohemian Rhapsody is rated PG-13, runs 135 minutes, and is playing at the Regal Santa Fe Stadium 14 and Violet Crown.
