Bank robber gets five years in prison
TAOS — A Taos man who robbed People’s Bank in Taos with a shotgun in 2016 was sentenced to five years in federal prison earlier this week.
Joaquin Romero was arrested Jan. 13, 2016, on a criminal complaint charging him with robbing a branch of People’s Bank inside the Albertsons supermarket in Taos.
During Monday’s proceedings in federal court in Albuquerque, Romero pleaded guilty to approaching a teller’s window Jan. 10, 2016, and stealing $850 in cash. Witnesses told law enforcement Romero racked the slide of the shotgun twice during the robbery.
Romero was arrested three days later in a swimming pool at a hotel in Gallup, where he had fled with his two sons.
In addition to the armed robbery charge, Romero was accused of brandishing and using a firearm in a violent crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Romero, 30, will be on supervised release for three years following the completion of his sentence.
