Bank rob­ber gets five years in prison

TAOS — A Taos man who robbed Peo­ple’s Bank in Taos with a shot­gun in 2016 was sen­tenced to five years in fed­eral prison ear­lier this week.

Joaquin Romero was ar­rested Jan. 13, 2016, on a crim­i­nal com­plaint charg­ing him with rob­bing a branch of Peo­ple’s Bank in­side the Al­bert­sons su­per­mar­ket in Taos.

Dur­ing Mon­day’s pro­ceed­ings in fed­eral court in Al­bu­querque, Romero pleaded guilty to ap­proach­ing a teller’s win­dow Jan. 10, 2016, and steal­ing $850 in cash. Wit­nesses told law en­force­ment Romero racked the slide of the shot­gun twice dur­ing the rob­bery.

Romero was ar­rested three days later in a swim­ming pool at a ho­tel in Gallup, where he had fled with his two sons.

In ad­di­tion to the armed rob­bery charge, Romero was ac­cused of bran­dish­ing and us­ing a firearm in a vi­o­lent crime, and be­ing a felon in pos­ses­sion of a firearm and am­mu­ni­tion.

Romero, 30, will be on su­per­vised re­lease for three years fol­low­ing the com­ple­tion of his sen­tence.
