THANKSGIVING BREAK MEANS SCHOOLS CLOSED

Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, and most schools and colleges are closed for part or all of the week. Santa Fe Public Schools will close Wednesday and remain closed through the weekend. Most private and charter schools also will close Thursday and Friday, so check individual school websites for schedules. Santa Fe Community College and the Santa Fe Higher Education Center will close from Thursday through Sunday. All campus facilities will be closed at the college, including the early childhood center and the William C. Witter Fitness Center.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO HOST NATIVE AMERICAN EVENT

November is Native American Heritage Month, and Santa Fe Community College will help celebrate by hosting a ceremony, including a hoop dance and other dances, as well as a guest speaker, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the campus at 6401 Richards Ave. Call 505-428-1835 for information.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH PROGRAM IN WORKS

Santa Fe Public Schools has teamed with Nusenda Credit Union to initiate a new teacher of the month recognition program for educators working in the public schools. Students, parents, teachers, principals, community members, secretaries and others can nominate a teacher by completing an electronic nomination form available at www.sfps.info or by filling out a paper nomination form that can be found at the front desk of all school sites. A group of community partners from outside the district will review the nominations and select a teacher each month. The teacher will receive a gift from Nusenda and will be recognized on the district’s website and social media. The first teacher of the month will be named in December. STUDENT HOLIDAY CONCERTS BEGIN THIS WEEK

Santa Fe Public Schools’ music department has a long history of showcasing student talent during the holiday season, offering free concerts at almost all school sites and occasionally other venues. This year’s string of concerts kicks off with a second-grade music fest at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Amy Biehl Community School, 310 Avenida del Sur. Most of the other concerts begin the week of Nov. 26: a winter choral fest planned for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 28 in the auditorium at Capital High School, 4851 Paseo del Sol; a winter vocal music concert at 5:45 p.m. Nov. 29 at Nina Otero Community School, 5901 Herrera Dr.; and a performance by Aspen Community School students at 6:30 p.m Nov. 29 at Meow Wolf, 1352 Rufina Circle.
