Feb. 11, 1969: CHIMAYO — The Ar­mando Du­ran fam­ily, 107 S. Mon­tana, Roswell, gave their thanks to the El Cristo de Esquip­u­las for the safe re­turn of their son from ser­vice in Viet­nam in El San­tu­ario de Chimayo Mon­day.

Wil­liam R. Du­ran, who was dis­charged from the Army in De­cem­ber, spent one year with the 69th Ar­mored Di­vi­sion in Plieku, Viet­nam.

The se­nior Du­ran said this is the fam­ily’s sec­ond pil­grim­age to the San­tu­ario. The fam­ily first came in 1962 af­ter the birth of their grand­son, who they said was born pre­ma­turely and given lit­tle hope of liv­ing.

At that time, the Du­rans promised to bring the child’s first shoes to Santo Nino if their prayers were an­swered.

“He’s the pic­ture of health now,” said Mrs. Du­ran, who said the grand­son was born at seven months.
