THE PAST 100 YEARS
From the Santa Fe New Mexican: Feb. 11, 1919: J.W. Reilly, of Taos, is a business visitor in the city.
Attorney Lawrence Lee, of Albuquerque, is here on legal business.
W.G. Herberling, mining man of Valley Ranch, is at the De Vargas.
Feb. 11, 1969: CHIMAYO — The Armando Duran family, 107 S. Montana, Roswell, gave their thanks to the El Cristo de Esquipulas for the safe return of their son from service in Vietnam in El Santuario de Chimayo Monday.
William R. Duran, who was discharged from the Army in December, spent one year with the 69th Armored Division in Plieku, Vietnam.
The senior Duran said this is the family’s second pilgrimage to the Santuario. The family first came in 1962 after the birth of their grandson, who they said was born prematurely and given little hope of living.
At that time, the Durans promised to bring the child’s first shoes to Santo Nino if their prayers were answered.
“He’s the picture of health now,” said Mrs. Duran, who said the grandson was born at seven months.
