Santa Fe New Mexican

Unfair practices

-

I read, angrily, the recent story in The New Mexican (“The doctor will charge you now,” March 31). My doctor gave me the option of joining 400 “concierge” patients in his plan for “only” $3,000 per year. What a deal. With my Medicare and Medigap, I would be able to see a physician assistant or nurse practitioner. Conditions beyond their pay grade, and the doctor would then see me, once. Further M.D.-level treatment, and I would have to enroll in “concierge” care. Cost? Medicare, $135 per month; Medigap, $90 per month — premiums that would allow me to not see my doctor. Access to my doctor and his practice, $240 per month. That’s a total of $465 per month or $5,280 per year. My coffee? 16 cents per day. Several friends have left, as will I, and found quality and affordable care. Concierge is neither a good nor affordable alternative.
