Santiana Marrujo, a New Mexico Highlands University chemistry graduate, chose Notre Dame for her doctoral studies and received the prestigious Arthur J. Schmitt Leadership Fellow in
Science and Engineering from the university.
Marrujo, 23, of Mora, graduated from Highlands magna cum laude in May 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She was accepted to eight chemistry doctoral programs across the country.
Sara Lanctot of Santa Fe has been selected to attend the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars Onsite Experience at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., later this month. Lanctot is studying engineering and computer science at Santa Fe Community College.
Two Santa Fe students headed to New York recently for the U.S. Open to watch their idols play for one of the most prestigious Grand Slam events in tennis. Amanda Trujillo and Quinn Larok Morris,
students in the First Serve — New Mexico afterschool tennis and education program, were among 10 winners of the annual Arthur Ashe Essay Contest, sponsored by the National Junior Tennis and Learning section of the U.S. Tennis Association. The prize was a trip to New York with full accommodations for Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on Aug. 24, along with tickets to a Broadway show, a luncheon in their honor and more.
The Institute of American Indian Arts recently announced the recipients of the first George R.R. Martin Scholarships.
Last year, Martin, through his Literary Fund, pledged to fund one $15,000 and two $5,000 scholarships for IAIA students. The $15,000 Master Storyteller Scholarship was awarded to Jordana Bass (Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska).
Carrie Dada (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma), will receive the $5,000 Proven Storyteller Scholarship.
The $5,000 Newcomer Scholarship went to Adensunset Levy.
Several high school students from Santa Fe and Los Alamos recently were named among about 16,000 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, competing to earn more than 7,000 scholarships in the spring.

The New Mexico Governor’s Mansion Foundation and the New Mexico Film Office announced Carrie Dada of the Institute of American Indian Arts is the winner of the design contest for New Mexico’s official ornament, with the theme “New Mexico Films the Great American West.” Winners were announced Sept. 7 at a red carpet party at the Governor’s Mansion. Dada won a $2,500 prize.
