Customer service, help wanted

-

As we begin to see the long-anticipated reopening and revival of some of Santa Fe’s favorite industries, businesses are asking themselves, “what is the most important thing we can bring to our customers right now?”. The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce believes that positive interpersonal interactions and superb customer service are the answer. Regardless of business sector, the need for human connection is at an all-time high. From the receptionist at the Doctor’s office or the retailer at your favorite clothing store, the people of Santa Fe want to be welcomed back with smiling faces and positive customer experiences.

According to a survey by Forbes, “about 91% of customers said they were more likely to do business with companies that showed appreciation for them. So, implementing top customer appreciation practices now will be a key driving force behind an increase in loyal customers for your business this year”. Now more than ever, it is imperative to show customers that they are valued. This comes from hiring an eager, qualified workforce. During the pandemic, many businesses and organizations have downsized and laid off staff, happy to at least keep the doors open. As demand picks up again, qualified, experienced, and motivated customer service representatives are going to be in great demand. This will be true across all business sectors. Hospitality – including hotel, short-term rentals, restaurants, tourist activities and galleries – will be strong as home bound travelers from all over the US are anxious to hit the road and visit the wonderful destination of Santa Fe.

Likewise, retail demand is pent up. Shoppers are anxious to purchase at all price levels and categories – new shoes anyone?

Medical offices have been stressed for over a year and are eager to catch up and service their patients in a more relaxed environment.

Front desk staff will be needed as doors open and working from home will shrink in many cases. A recent Indeed.com search showed over 80 customer service positions available now in Santa Fe – and this is the slow season. As real estate, technology, healthcare, and tourism recover, expect to see Help Wanted signs around town and qualified applicants be able to request higher wages. All signs of a growing economy and greater opportunity for local people.

In the past year, we have adapted to new ways of shopping, working, dining, and communicating. With vaccination in progress and hope on the horizon, we are more aware of how important it is to have good customer service and employees that take pride in your business. In the reopening and rehiring phases, the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce encourages businesses to look at what it means to be part of the Santa Fe Community and translate value that to all interactions.
