A Christmas meal ‘muy diferente’
This winter had been very hard para mucha gente. No era tan difícil porque there had been that much snow; era porque a lot of people were sick con el flu. Grampo y Canutito fueron para la cocina pero they couldn’t find anything to eat.
“¿Qué vamos a hacer, grampo?”
Canutito asked him. “No hay nada
in the fridge más que un frasco de sour pickles y una botella de
ketchup, para comer.
“Yo puedo hacerte unos scrambled eggs, m’hijo,” Grampo Caralampio said.
“No way; Chaleh!” Canutito protested. (Él quería comer pizza o chile con frijoles.)
“¡Chaleh y te compro un pito y en la vuelta de lo quito!” Grampo teased him.
“No way but I’ll buy you a whistle and when I return, I’ll take it back,” Canutito translated. “Eso no hace make ningún sentido,” grampo, he said.
“It didn’t make any sense para mí tampoco, m’hijo,” grampo said, “pero

used to say in school.” He cracked the eggs e hizo un revoltillo.
Mientras que grampo y Canutito ate their scrambled eggs, Canutito turned to him y le dijo: “Grampo, ahora que grama está enferma, who’s going to make us la comida para el

“Well, let me see now,” Grampo Caralampio said, “ya comimos ham para el Thanksgiving Day y comimos roast beef y dulces para el Halloween y comimos hamburgers para el Fourth of July. I guess que podemos hacer un roast turkey con todos los trimmings y servírselo a tu grama allá en la cama. That would be quite surprise para ella.”
“Yo puede pelar papas para hacer mashed potatoes,” Canutito said. “También puedo hacer camotes con marshmallows y greve de jarro. Do you know
cómo preparar un ganso, grampo?” he asked him. “I mean, puede hacer un turkey con real stuffing
adentro?”
“Sí, I think I can,” grampo replied. “Yo sé que tu grama puts green chile and raisins
en el relleno pero I don’t know qué más le echa al stuffing, do you?”
“I have read somewhere que en algunas partes de los United States, some people like to put oysters en el stuffing para darle un buen sabor, grampo,” Canutito said.
“Pero do you know where to find algunos de esos oystiones to put en el stuffing, m’hijo?” grampo asked the boy. “Las ostras only grow in deep water como en el mar.” Canutito thought por un momento and then he said, “I think I know

En la mañana cuando Grama Cuca ate the turkey and stuffing, se vomitó. “What is that awful taste?” she asked. Instead of oysters, Canutito had brought Rocky Mountain oysters y el grampo put esos huevitos de borreguito into the stuffing. Fue una comida bien gross …
