Effort and excellence: Here’s to local champs

-

NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier this spring provided sports fans with an interesting look at the games people play. A few minutes after his Milwaukee Bucks were vanquished in a playoff series, Antetokounmpo dismissed the notion his team’s season had been a failure.

“There is no failure in sports,” he said. “There’s good days, bad days. Some days you are able to be successful; some days you’re not. Some days, it’s your turn, some days it’s not your turn. And that’s what sports is about. Some days you don’t always win. Some, other people are going to win.”

Antetokounmpo has a point. His message: The common denominator in sports is neither the winning nor the losing, but striving to reach maximum potential.

But there are moments when winning is achievable, and in its own way, glorious. And today, for several column inches on this editorial page, we are going to celebrate Northern New Mexico athletes who were able to win when it counted most — at state championship meets and games.

The following is a list of state champions, both on the individual and team levels. You’ll agree it’s an impressive group. We salute them today, not only for their victories, but for their constancy of effort. As Antetokounmpo noted, it’s only through a push to improve that winning eventually comes.
