Rep. Trujillo to step down from state House on July 1

Five-term Democrat of Albuquerque cites age and health as factors

Longtime state Rep. Christine Trujillo announced Saturday she is stepping down from the state House effective July 1.

Trujillo, an Albuquerque Democrat and a retired educator who has been in the Legislature for five terms, represents House District 25. Bernalillo County commissioners will appoint a new House member for the remainder of Trujillo’s term; the seat will then be on the November 2024 general election ballot.

“It’s been the honor of my lifetime to represent our community in the Roundhouse for the last decade. Thank you to my neighbors for placing your trust in me as your representative,” Trujillo said in a statement Saturday.

Trujillo, 69, told the Albuquerque Journal her age and health were factors in her decision.

In a news release announcing her resignation, House Democrats praised her record, saying she has “championed New Mexico’s students, teachers, and working families” and supported “policies to improve access to health care, support survivors of sexual assault, raise wages for educators, and ensure quality education for students of all ages in New Mexico.”

Among other bills, the news release highlighted her support for legislation this year to make menstrual hygiene products freely available in public schools.

“Rep. Trujillo has been an important voice in our chamber, drawing on her experience as an educator and her wealth of compassion to speak up for our students and our teachers, as well as working people and their families,” House Speaker Javier Martínez, D-Albuquerque, said in a statement.

“I am deeply grateful to Christine for her service to her community and her kindness to her colleagues during her tenure in the Roundhouse.”
