What happened: The Horsemen got the win they needed, overcoming 11 3-pointers by the host Pirates to hold on for a nondistric­t win Friday night. Grants led by three at the half, but St. Michael’s used a 3-2 zone defense that was effective in slowing down the perimeter attack. “We had the energy tonight, especially in the second half,” Horsemen head coach Gerard Garcia said.

Top players: Donevan Ricker led the St. Michael’s attack with 23 points, while Nick Angelley added 18 and Reed Bass scored 11. Grants’ (12-6) Boudy Melonas scored 14 points, while Noah Victorino had 12.

What’s next: It’s on to District 2-3A play for the Horsemen (8-8), as they travel to Raton on Tuesday.

What happened: The Demons got off to an uneven start, leading 14-2 in the first quarter of Thursday’s nondistric­t game in Toby Roybal Memorial Gymnasium. The Sundevils cut the lead to 14-8 at the end of the quarter. Santa Fe High got a big 3-pointer by Christian Herrera to end the half with a 29-17 lead, and the margin grew to 41-24 midway through the third. “We jump out to a lead and then we make bad decisions,” Demons head coach Cisco Rivera said. “Christian and the bench gave us the energy we needed, especially in the second half.”

Top players: Herrera had 19 points in his first game back from a weeklong illness and Michael Abeyta added 13.

What’s next: Santa Fe High (13-3) plays Albuquerqu­e High on Tuesday. Española (6-12) play Pojoaque Valley on the same day.

What happened: The Jaguars overcame a slow start Thursday, trailing the host Pirates 12-10 after a quarter, with an overwhelmi­ng second quarter. They scored 29 points to take a 39-25 lead at the half and never looked back.

Top players: Eli Dominiguez had 21 points to lead Capital, while Santiago Bencomo added 20. Boudy Melonas led the Pirates with 15.

What’s next: The Jaguars (10-5) have one more nondistric­t game Saturday at Pojoaque Valley before starting District 5-5A play next week.

Girls basketball

What happened: The Rams used consecutiv­e 18-point quarters to take a 36-8 lead at the half of a nondistric­t game Thursday in Edward A. Ortiz Memorial Gymnasium. The lead grew to 48-15 after three quarters.

Top players: Annica Montoya led the Jaguars with 11 points.

What’s next: Capital (3-13) open District 5-5A play Wednesday at Albuquerqu­e Rio Grande.

What happened: The Lady Sundevils needed a half to warm up and scored 30 points in the second half to extend a 16-14 halftime lead.

Top players: Aliya Rael Lopez had 16 points for Española.
