What happened: The Demons seemed to be in control of the District 5-5A game Saturday at Bulldog City, then the roof caved in, thanks to a 2-for-10 performance at the free-throw line down the stretch. The Bulldogs rallied from a 13-point deficit to take a 55-53 lead with 4.9 seconds left before Joe Gonzales hit a 47-foot heave at the buzzer for the win. Santa Fe High led 21-16 at the half and 43-32 heading into the fourth quarter. The win keeps the Demons in the running for the district title. “Typically, we shoot 85% at the line in the fourth and 80% overall,” Demons head coach Cisco Rivera said. “[Albuquerque High] played well, and they hit some tough shots. But I thought we played defense OK down the stretch.”

Top players: Gonzales finished with a teamhigh 15 points, while Lukas Turner added 13 and Christian Herrera nine. What’s next: Santa Fe High (17-5 overall, 4-2 in 5-5) plays district leader Los Lunas at home on Valentine’s Day.

What happened: The Cardinals kept the Blue Griffins off the glass for most of the District 2-3A game in Michael Marr Gymnasium and built a 45-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Prep finally stepped up its intensity and cut the margin to seven points before running out of gas.

“The boys played the way they needed to for 32 minutes in the fourth,” Prep head coach Joe Vigil said. “For having a size advantage, we weren’t getting good position [in the paint] and that was the difference.”

Top players: Robertson’s Jesse James Gonzales had a team-high 19 points, while Nathan Gonzales added 18 and Mateo Contreras scored 11. Morgan Field and Van Anderson each had 15 points to lead Prep, while Mitchell Grover added 10.

What’s next: Robertson (20-1, 6-0) plays at St. Michael’s on Friday. Prep (11-10, 2-4) plays the Horsemen on Tuesday.
