PREP ROUNDUP

Boys basketball

What happened: It took the Blue Griffins a quarter to find their rhythm, but they exploded once they did in the second quarter. They scored 25 points in that quarter to turn a 17-13 lead into a 42-17 halftime advantage Thursday in a nondistrict game in Prep Gymnasium. Prep head coach Joe Vigil said the Timberwolves came out with a lot of intensity and it took his team a while to adapt. “We were finally able to get the defense where we wanted it and build the lead,” Vigil said.

Top players: Morgan Field led the Blue Griffins’ attack with 20 points, while Mitchell Grover added 11. East Mountain was paced by Evren Neal’s 11 points.

What’s next: Prep (13-10 overall) returns to District 2-3A play Saturday against West Las Vegas.

What happened: The Roadrunners kept the game relatively close for a half, as the District 7-1A-leading Silverbacks built a 27-15 lead at the half in Larson Gym. Legacy Academy put the game away by outscoring NMSD 17-9 in the third and pulled away.

Top players: Bryant Scales led Legacy Academy (18-5 overall, 7-0 in 7-1A) with 16 points, while Javion Scales added 13. NMSD did not report any top scorers.

What’s next: The Roadrunners (11-5, 2-4) play the Albuquerque co-op team of Evangel Christian and Oak Grove Classical Academy on Tuesday.

Girls basketball

What happened: The Lady Dons used a 15-8 scoring run in the second quarter to take a 22-17 halftime lead and never looked back in a District 2-3A game in Gillie Lopez Gymnasium. They upped the lead to 31-25 heading into the fourth and pushed it to as much as 43-31 before a late Lady Horsemen rally. St. Michael’s has struggled with answering opponents’ runs during district play and head coach Sonya Ruiz said they need to fix that. “We can’t be giving up that many points, but we just gotta score,” Ruiz said. “Our bigger problem is on the offensive end. We’re just not hitting shots.”

Top players: West Las Vegas had a balanced scoring effort, with Alexis Pacheco and Tyra Horner each scoring 14 points. Mariella Ruiz also had 14 points to pace the Lady Horsemen, while Mia Duran added 10.

What’s next: The Lady Dons (12-10, 2-2) play St. Michael’s (13-7, 0-3) again Tuesday. The Lady Horsemen play Las Vegas Robertson on Saturday.
