Recycling center on Agua Fría is a mess

-

Ihave a question for Mayor Alan Webber: Have you ever personally taken your empty glass bottles to the poorly maintained recycling center on Agua Fría Street? Does it meet your standards? If it doesn’t, is it because the city underfunds this site or because of poor management? Either way, is there reason to hope you might do something soon to make things better? Many of us drive a long distance to do our civic duty by recycling glass. We deserve better.

The real epidemic

The epidemic in the United States is not fentanyl; it is greed, wealth inequality, racism, privilege and selfishness.

The wrong message

Messaging is everything. What did Alabama Sen. Katie Britt’s message in her State of the Union rebuttal for the Republican Party say to her daughter and son as she promoted Christian Republican values, which shackle women to the kitchen and the bedroom? From her kitchen, Britt was promoting Christian Republican values that strip women of practically all reproductive rights, messaging a woman’s job is in the home to cook and make babies. She made it clear lying is OK when she messaged the tragedy of a young woman’s rape occurred at the feet of the Biden administration when, in fact, it happened in Mexico by a cartel years ago.

What I can’t wrap my head around is that outside her “home,” she has been a lawyer, an elected U.S. senator, a CEO and a high-ranking chief of staff in politics. So how can she look her children in the eye and tell them that a woman’s place is in the kitchen and bedroom, in service to men? A good mother would never teach their children to model themselves after Donald Trump, a master of all the seven deadly sins.

True Britt

I’m surprised they didn’t show Sen. Katie Britt’s bare feet for dramatic effect.

Goodbye, friend

How do you say goodbye to someone you thought would always be looking after New Mexico? I am so proud to call retiring Sen. Nancy Rodriguez, D-Santa Fe, my friend, but, more than my friend, she was the matriarch of the Senate. For 24 years, she has been protecting and fighting for her constituents and in so doing helped all New Mexicans. Nancy has little use for titles, of which she has many, but protecting and fighting for the people of New Mexico was what she did with elegance and fortitude. I may seem somewhat disrespectful in not addressing Nancy as Sen. Rodriguez, but someone who loves her state and its people as much as Nancy is la vecino, gente un

amiga. She’s a friend who listens to her constituents’ concerns with the same caring she does for her own family. I don’t want to say goodbye, so let me end by saying, “Vaya con dios, mi amiga.”

Hitler’s playbook

John Berkenfield’s superb letter (“Terrifying possibility,” Letters to the Editor, March 11) summarizing the ignoramus Donald Trump’s endless moral, ethical and legal failings, hit the nail squarely on the head. However, the letter does not mention a powerful reason Trump should be disqualified from holding public office: Trump has modeled every single step of his political career on Adolf Hitler’s playbook. This indisputable fact leaps from the pages of two lengthy, painstakingly documented biographical studies of Hitler, one by a British and one by a German academic. Also from The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by legendary journalist William Shirer, who daily covered Hitler throughout his rise in Germany from 1930 to 1940.

Perfectly expressed

My thanks to Roberto Roibal for the article, (“Nuclear bombs don’t get ‘seal of approval,’ ” My View, March 16). It perfectly expresses my belief it is illogical and wrongheaded to place winning an arms race (a race that has no winners) above caring for the needs of our citizens and an ailing planet. The path we are on only places us in an increasingly dangerous world. An arms race is not the path to peace. As Roibal said: “Why do our elected officials in New Mexico (and in Washington D.C.) allow this? ... We must all stand up against this insanity. Ban the bomb and give peace a chance.
