Animal rescue’s budget strained by taking in dog, her puppies
What better way to celebrate National Cuddly Puppy Day on Saturday than with a rescue story about a mother who gave birth to not one cuddly puppy but 10?
Eight weeks ago, a good Samaritan found Goldie, a mixed-breed dog on the streets of Clovis. Goldie, whose age is unknown, was pregnant when the woman took her in, and the dog was fortunate to have her litter in a clean, warm home, and gave birth to 10 healthy puppies.
At the end of February, the woman was being evicted and Goldie and her puppies had nowhere to go. Dew Paws Rescue was contacted, and foster homes were ready. The puppies were transported to a foster home in Corrales, and Goldie was taken to a Clovis veterinarian for emergency surgery for a prolapsed rectum.
A local rescue group covered the cost, and afterward, Goldie was transported via three drivers to Dew Paws Rescue in Santa Fe. Donna Leshne of Dew Paws Rescue then coordinated a visit to Thrive, an emergency veterinarian service, for Goldie to be assessed.
Leshne is now seeking fosters, and fosters with the intent to adopt, for the puppies. All of them, five females and five males, weigh under 10 pounds and will probably not grow to more than 35 pounds once they mature. They have all had 2-DHPP shots and are dewormed and Dew Paws Rescue will follow-up until all medical care is done.
As for the mother, Goldie has recovered from her surgery and is in a separate foster home waiting to be adopted.
Helping to rescuing the dog, her puppies, emergency surgery and required follow-up medical care has left the small animal rescue in financial dire straits. Many smaller rescues do not have the funding or donations larger shelters receive.

Gordon, a nearly 2-year-old dog, has a playful and energetic spirit. Gordon is the perfect adventure companion, always ready to explore and make memories.
Despite his youthful exuberance, he also possesses a gentle demeanor and has recently discovered a newfound sense of confidence. His love for exploration knows no bounds.

Lady is a charming 2-year-old dog with a heart of gold.
While she may appear a bit anxious in a kennel, once outside she transforms into a different dog.
Lady is wonderfully goofy and endlessly curious, always ready to explore the world around her.
She thrives on love and has an innate desire to see those around her happy. Lady’s radiant personality shines brightest when she’s given the opportunity to be herself outside the confines of the
shelter. She would greatly benefit from leaving the shelter environment, even if only temporarily, to experience the warmth and comfort of a foster home. Anyone interested in fostering Lady may email NewHope@SFHumane Society.org.
Española Humane: Yukio, a cat, is curious, engaged and loves to explore. She prefers to be inside. Yukio loves head boops and rubbing her head on people’s legs, and after she has had enough petting, she will roll around and stretch on the floor for a good minute. She is 2 years old, weighs 11 pounds, is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.
Gia is a 1-year-old shepherd mix who weighs 56 pounds and is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She will make a great dog for any family but would definitely enjoy an active and adventurous one.
The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
Felines & Friends: Fluffy black
2-year-old cat Turducken was pregnant when abandoned. Her kittens Mashed Potatoes, Green Bean Casserole, Stuffing and Gravy were born on Thanksgiving. Her kittens are weaned, and Turducken is ready for adoption.
Green Bean Casserole is a fluffy black tabby. She is a champion napper, claiming to top spot in the cat tree as her own. She greatly enjoys brushing.
Stuffing is a gray fluffball who takes a moment to warm up in new surroundings. But once she’s decided a person is friendly, she’s very happy to purr up a storm while being petted. Bean and Stuffing snuggle and play well with each other.
They should be adopted together and must be the only pets in their new household because Bean growls at other cats and Stuffing is very afraid of dogs.
Apply at FandFnm.org to meet Turducken or her kittens. Cats awaiting adoption can also be visited at Teca Tu, Petco and the Turquoise Teapot & Cat Cafe.
The Horse Shelter: Beau is a 5-yearold sorrel quarter horse-type gelding. He is doing well in saddle training and needs an experienced adopter. He has an easygoing temperament, has low reactivity and is more whoa than go. Beau stands 14.1 hands high.
Anyone interested in adopting Beau may review his riding videos at The HorseShelter.org or call 505-577-4041.
