A grateful Christus St. Vincent celebrates Mayo partnership

- Dr. David Gonzales is chief medical officer of Christus St. Vincent.

Five years ago, Christus St. Vincent earned the opportunity to become New Mexico’s only member of the respected Mayo Clinic Care Network. It was a momentous occasion met with great celebration as we envisioned all that might be possible for health care in north-central New Mexico.

As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of our clinical collaboration with Mayo, we look back on that day with gratitude and pride. Today, there are fewer than 50 organizations worldwide in the elite network of providers chosen to benefit from Mayo’s expertise. We are grateful — ever so grateful — to have access to world-class care for the benefit of our community.

Being part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network has elevated us to new heights, furthering our efforts to ensure an environment where innovation and compassion thrive, and where our physicians and providers have access to the knowledge, resources, and clinical expertise of the world’s leading health care provider.

From complex medical evaluations to routine check-ups, every patient who walks through our doors receives the gold standard of care, including access to a second opinion from a Mayo Clinic specialist whenever their provider believes it will benefit them — all at no cost to the patient.

Over the last five years, Christus St. Vincent providers requested 988 eConsults from Mayo Clinic specialists across a range of disciplines, including oncology, hematology, pulmonary medicine, neurology, cardiology and more.

Our providers also spent 1,065 Consulting Hours with Mayo Clinic on a variety of topics that have made Christus St. Vincent more responsive to the changing needs of our community including:

♦ Establishing an annual oncology symposium.

♦ Obtaining Primary Stroke Center certification.

♦ Implementing lung cancer and nodule screening programs.

♦ Strengthening patient safety efforts through a high-reliability campaign.

♦ Establishing a Center for Healthy Aging.

♦ Incorporating an improved suicide risk assessment tool.

♦ Introducing workplace violence prevention strategies.

♦ Utilizing COVID-19 pulmonary function testing guidelines and cleaning.

♦ Incorporating COVID-19 critical care and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome resources.

The highest medical practice users of Mayo Clinic Care Network services include:

♦ Cancer services, 283 expert second opinions and 165 consulting hours.

♦ Neurology, 105 expert second opinions and 112 consulting hours.

♦ Pulmonary medicine, 72 expert second opinions.

♦ Infectious disease, 61 expert second opinions.

♦ Rheumatology, 58 expert second opinions. This collaboration has allowed critical diagnostic and treatment decisions to be made in collaboration with the world leader in medicine — without patients ever needing to travel far from home.

From virtual experiences to in-person training and consulting, Christus St. Vincent has engaged with Mayo Clinic to expand access to care, train in new best practices, optimize talent and resources, better support our nurses and associates, maximize hospital safety, and improve patient experience.

These and other benefits of our membership have not only transformed the landscape of health care in Santa Fe, but have also nurtured the bonds that unite us as a community. Our quality initiatives, clinical trials and educational outreach programs have served to educate and empower our community while helping to ensure that every individual has access to the care they deserve, close to home. Our journey has been an exciting one.

As we celebrate our five-year anniversary as a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence, compassion, and the pursuit of a healthier, brighter tomorrow — for our patients, and for our North-central New Mexico community for generations to come.
