The D-1001 aims to eliminate the need for batteries by using an energy cell that turns the ocean itself into a power source. Rated to 100 meters and billed to provide up to 2,000 hours of service, it’s a bit hefty (about 11 inches long and nearly 2 pounds, though neutral in water). We’ve not yet tested, or frankly, figured out how to test, its lumen output, but on our night dives, we found the modest 9-degree LED beam bright enough to be adequate, and its operation to be perfectly straightforward. In any case, the D-1001’s big appeal is the eco-friendly convenience of battery-free diving.
