Hospital gets a permanent president
Steve Roach has served in interim role since Oct. ’19
» UMass Memorial Health Care announced Monday that Steve Roach has officially been named the president of UMass Memorial HealthAlliance- Clinton Hospital after serving as interim president since October 2019. Roach will continue to serve as president of UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital as well.
“Steve has been an invaluable
leader within the UMass Memorial Health Care system for the past seven years,” said Robert J. Paulhus Jr., chair for the Hospital Board of Trustees. “He brings immense experience in health care to the position and has certainly shown his expertise leading HealthAlliance- Clinton Hospital through such challenging times as the coronavirus pandemic and recovering from financial losses over the last two years. His work at Marlborough Hospital since 2013 helped stabilize that organization and he has brought that same tenacity for improvement to HealthAlliance- Clinton Hospital. His track record at previous institutions has shown him to be a turnaround specialist.”
Doug Brown, president of UMass Memorial Community Hospitals Inc. and a HealthAlliance- Clinton trustee, went further when lauding the announcement.
“Despite the challenges of the pandemic during the last 10 months, Steve and his leadership team have made significant progress in HealthAlliance- Clinton Hospital’s turnaround, including dramatically improving the hospital’s financial picture this past year, settling contract negotiations with the Leominster Campus’ Massachusetts Nurses Association, and the recent opening of the new and refurnished Emergency Department on the Leominster Campus.”
Before joining UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital, Roach served as CEO of Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer. He also served as chief financial officer and chief operating officer there prior to his appointment as CEO in 2006. Prior to this, Steve served as director of financial and strategic planning at Emerson Hospital in Concord and senior financial analyst at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
“I am appreciative of the support and commitment the board is making by elevating me to president,” Roach said. “HealthAlliance- Clinton Hospital is a treasure for this community. We take our role and responsibility seriously in making a healthier North Central Massachusetts. Our caregivers are part of this community and I couldn’t be happier joining this outstanding and dedicated team. I was also touched by how the hospital has been embraced during the pandemic. The support we have received from businesses and individuals alike has been truly felt and continues to prop us up as we battle COVID19.”
Roach graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in health management and policy, and Bentley College with a Master of Business Administration. He has served on numerous community boards and foundations, is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He and his wife live in Littleton.
“We certainly look forward to our future work with Steve,” Paulhus said. “Our goal is to make HealthAlliance- Clinton Hospital the hospital of choice for the communities of our region while ensuring our continued collaboration with the rest of the UMass Memorial Health Care system.”
