VFW Auxiliary sponsors singing contest
TOWNSEND » A local veterans’ service organization is asking students to show their patriotism by singing their own versions of the national anthem.
The VFW Auxiliary to Townsend Post No. 6538 is sponsoring the
Get Excited for the Red, White, and Blue singing contest through March 31.
In conjunction with the VFW Auxiliary Department of Massachusetts and the national VFW Auxiliary, the Townsend post is looking for kids age six to 16 to record and submit a solo vocal performance
of “The Star Spangled Banner” that must’ve been recorded between July 1 last year and March 31 this year.
The winner will receive $25 and be entered into the VFW Auxiliary Department of Massachusetts competition, where $50 will be awarded to the first place winner and $25 will be given to the second place finisher.
The winning of the state competition will then advance to the National Auxiliary Program Division competition, where a $100 gift card will be awarded to one winner in each of the ten National Auxiliary Program Divisions.
One national winner will be selected from those national winners to receive an additional $1,000 Visa gift card.
Recordings of applicants can be done a cappella, with backing tracks or instruments.
Applicants should state their name and age before singing and can sing in the arrangement and genre of their choice. Applicants are not allowed to change the words of the song for their performance.
Entry forms and information about the contest can be obtained from local teachers, along with Betty Mae Tenney of the Townsend post or on vfwauxiliary.org. Tenney can be reached by calling 978597- 6495 or 978- 665-4026, all entries should be submitted to her by March 31.
