Suit up for summer

- By Gretta Monahan

With temperatures hitting the 90s and COVID-19 cases on the wane, there’s a serious party vibe in the air. After a year of being cooped up, it feels like a summer of happiness is about to start. So why not let it be inspired by the ’ 60s-era Summer of Love — especially when bathing suits are sporting rainbow tie-dye, sunand-moon designs, space dyes and trippy mushroom patterns from the Age of Aquarius?

Find them all over everything from bikinis and maillots to tankinis and swimskirts. It’s all very flower power, and very groovy. Here are some favorites.

Bikinis will always stay in style, no matter what the decade. Witness Beach Riot’s Chelsea bottom ($88 on carbon38.com) and top ($118 on carbon38.com), both in a wild print: psychedelic Geo pattern. The bottoms offer full coverage that hits at mid-hip. Another winner is Becca Psychedelica Cheryl Triangle bikini top ($64 on barenecessities.com) and bikini bottom ($58 on barenecessities.com). With its classic triangle halter-tie top and subtly shimmering swirl print, it’s pretty much like a party in its own right.

Meanwhile, one-piece suits rarely disappoint on fit, coverage and comfort. Now they don’t have to skimp on style or flattery, either. The colorful Miraclesuit Escapr Casbah ($186 on miraclesuit.com) sports a scalloped sweetheart neckline and side shirring that minimize and accentuate in all the right places, and underwire gives support.

Back in the ’60s, mushrooms (as well as flowers) were a very consistent motif — found everywhere from curtains and raincoats to pillows and, yes, swimsuits. So slip into this throwback and get in the groove: The Mushroom Psychedelic Color Pattern AOP Classic one-piece swimsuit ($34.95 on raws.us) is contoured and comfy, in a very stretchy, super durable fabric.

Up for even more mushrooms? The Psychedelic Trippy Mushroom Themed onepiece swimsuit ($49.99 on jtamigo.com) is your next step. Funky, fun and fetching thanks to a predominant purple haze of a background, which won’t fade over time.

Equally trippy is the Psychedelic Optical Illusion one-piece Swimming Costume SC120 ($39.99 on artfire.com). Believe me, it will bring looks for both its dizzying pattern — and for how flattering it is.

And find boho tie-dye swirls galore in TYR Women’s Bohemian Diamondfit one-piece swimsuit ($64.99 on swimoutlet.com). As sleek as it is flexible, it’s made of Durafast One fabric that’s high-quality and fade-free, not to mention it provides SPF 50+.

One of the coolest designs this season: the tanksuit. As in, the Tania Tropical-Print one-piece swimsuit ($298 on saksfifthave

nue.com) by Johnny Was. The boho chic company is known for its wild and loud (but still unquestionably pretty) prints, and this zip-front, shortsleeved, neoprene T-shirt-meetsmaillot bears the same magical combination.

And the options for bottoms don’t end there. Swimskirts are no longer the domain of grandmas; they’re cooler and sexier than ever, when you take a look at designs like the Floral Print Halter Sexy Boho Swimdresses ($16.99 on vencano.com). Check out the multicolor, halter, ikat-meets-tribal pattern in green, taupe and aqua patterns. And then there’s the swimskirt’s cousin, the swim short. Meet the splashy-as-can-be, brightest-blue tiedye Swim Shorts ($36 on modli.co). Highwaisted and sleek-fitting, they’re as great for volleyball on the beach as they are for serious diving. Great coverage, but still all kinds of flattering.

Now suit up!
