CMADA lacrosse tourney pairings announced
Just like high school baseball, softball, tennis and volleyball, local lacrosse teams will have the chance to vie for, in essence, a sectional title before the start of the statewide tournament.
On Thursday, the Central Mass. Athletic Directors Association announced the pairings for its boys and girls lacrosse tournaments, which are based on the MIAA’S power rankings and get underway this weekend.
A pair of local boys teams will take part in the Class A tournament, as No. 6 Leominster (9-7) will travel to No. 3 Shrewsbury at 1 p.m. Saturday, while top- seeded Nashoba (16- 0) eighthseeded Wachusett Regional Saturday at 11 a.m.
In the boys Class B pairings, eighth-seeded Oakmont Regional (77) visits No. 1 Littleton on Friday afternoon, taking on the top-seeded Tigers at 4 p.m.
Regardless of game outcomes, Nashoba is slated to host both boys championship games on June 2. Class B faces off at 5 p.m., with A following in the nightcap.
Leominster’s girls (13-2) will play in the Class A bracket as the fifth seed, traveling to Shrewsbury on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tilt with the fourth-seeded Colonials. Eighth- seeded Nashoba (7-7) heads to Harvard to face No. 1 Bromfield Saturday at noon in another Class A quarterfinal.
The girls Class A title tilt is scheduled to take place at Nashoba on June 3 at 5 p.m.
Five Falcons honored for sportsmanship
The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) announced its Spring Sportsmanship Teams on Thursday, with one player from each spring sport at Fitchburg State applauded for their behavior in their respective competitions.
Graduate student Richard Sharp was selected from the FSU baseball team, while junior Eva Kozikowski represented women’s lacrosse. Junior Gene Bouthiette and sophomore Olivia Kephart were tabbed from the men’s and women’s outdoor track teams, respectively, and sophomore
Bryanna O’connor earned the honor from the Falcons softball team.
“I want to congratulate the 35 MASCAC studentathletes who have been named to the spring sportsmanship team,” MASCAC Commissioner Angela Baumann said in a press release. “These honorees exhibited a core tenant of the MASCAC and NCAA mission of exemplary sportsmanship both on and off the playing field.”
The MASCAC Sportsmanship Team, according to the release from the conference, “is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team in every sport that best demonstrates the values of the MASCAC and its Sportsmanship Statement, regardless of their overall performance or statistics for the team. A student- athlete from each institution is selected by their coach to be placed on the Sportsmanship Team.”
