The Disabled American Veterans of Massachusetts recently recognized state Sen. John Cronin, D-lunenburg, as Legislator of the Year.

Cronin, a former infantry officer and combat veteran, was celebrated for his work on various legislative efforts focused on veterans’ affairs. He was recognized at the DAV’S yearly state convention at Doubletree

Hotel in Leominster from June 13-15.

“I am incredibly humbled to receive this honor from the Disabled American Veterans of Massachusetts,” Cronin said in a press release. “As a Senator, I am proud to have been a part of critical reforms to improve the lives of veterans and their families.”

The DAV is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting disabled former service members and their families and promoting legislative policies favorable to veterans. It serves more than 1.2 million members across the country.

Cronin has been a part of numerous legislative efforts to improve the quality of life for Massachusetts veterans, including the Soldiers’ Home Governance and Bond bill, noted members of the DAV. Cronin also advocated for funding to construct the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke and helped create a regional equity model to establish long-term supportive care housing facilities for veterans across the state.

While Cronin celebrated those efforts, he said more could be done by the Legislature to further assist Massachusetts veterans.

“While the Senate has taken many steps to address the issues facing veterans, there is still more work to be done,” he said. “I am excited to be a part of that work and look forward to continuing to fight for those who have served our nation.”
