WOLVES SLOWED IN LOSS TO ASHLAND

Nashoba suffers defeat for third time in five games

The Nashoba Regional girls basketball team fell at home Wednesday night, dropping a 58- 51 decision to visiting Ashland.

The loss is the third in five games for the Wolves (9-3), who return to action tonight at Oakmont Regional. Ashland outscored the hosts 19-11 in the final eight minutes to claim the victory.

AYER-SHIRLEY 45, LUNENBURG 41 >> The Panthers (10-2) received 11 points each from Maddie Davis and Theresa Arakelian as they fended off the Blue Knights (112). Grace Cormier added 10 points in the victory.

Lunenburg’s effort was led by Emma Kibble and Erin Peplowski, who each scored eight

points.

ST. BERNARD’S 57, WEST BOYLSTON 25 >> The Bernardian­s improve to 7- 6.

GARDNER 5, ST. BERNARD’S 2 >> The Bernardian­s ( 10- 4- 0) had their nine-game winning streak snapped despite goals by Hunter Lammi and Nick Tomczak. Adam Pepin and Nolan Stout notched assists in defeat. LUNENBURG/AYER- SHIRLEY 11, TRI COUNTY 2 >> Nick Fortier and Dom Benner each had three goals and an assist as the Blue Knights improved to 4-8-2. Andrew Nicosia added two goals and two assists and Tyler Fortier had a goal and four helpers in the victory.

Owen Hurley and Ethan Dionne also scored for the Blue Knights.

Girls hockey

LEOMINSTER 3, CONCORD- CAR

LISLE 0 >> Carina Eshbaugh stopped all 10 shots she faced to earn the shutout and Rachel Simkewicz scored twice as the Blue Devils improved to 9-3-1. Kailyn Hawkins also scored.

Men’s basketball

MCLA 66, FITCHBURG STATE 64

>> Fitchburg State opened the contest with 6-3 edge as senior Tajahn Joyner netted a pair of buckets, while classmate Dayne Allen added a basket. The Falcons pushed the lead to 16-7 when freshman Tyrone Manderson drained a 3-pointer before MCLA went on a 12-1 run, capped with a 3 by junior Kumar Lewis to give the hosts a 19-17 margin.

The Trailblaze­rs extended the lead to 22-18 with sophomore Jojo Garcia hit a 3-pointer, but Fitchburg State battled back to take a 26-25 advantage on a Joyner layup. MCLA regained the lead at 30-26 on baskets from senior Reece Racette and newcomer Jayden Mills.

The Green and Gold answered back on a Jaylen Swan jumper to reduce the deficit to 36-33 before MCLA took a 4034 lead into the break with junior Mamadou Diallo registerin­g a layup.

Following the intermissi­on, MCLA upped the lead to 46-34 on a three-pointer from sophomore Korey Greenland, but

Fitchburg State got two baskets from Joyner to make the score 46-38.

The Trai lblazers pushed the advantage to 57- 46 with graduate student Noah Yearsley connecting on a 3 before the Falcons sophomore Frederick Siayor notched a jumper and Joyner

added another 3-pointer to make the score 61-55.

The Green and Gold went on a 7-1 run late in the contest to knot the score at 62- 62. The Trailblaze­r grabbed a 65- 62 edge as Yearsley sank a

free throw, but Fitchburg got a layup from Allen to trim the lead to just one . MCLA secured the victory however with Garcia hitting one- of-two from the charity stripe.

The Falcons were

paced by Joyner with a career-best 24 points to go with eight rebounds, six assists and one steal. Sophomore Matthew Tanis added nine points, seven boards, an assist and a steal.
