While the 2022-23 campaign rolls on into the MASCAC tournament, the Fitchburg State University ice hockey team is garnering recruits for the future.

A pair of junior players committed this week to joining the Falcons for the 2023-24 campaign, as Hunter Dunn of the USPL Premier’s Northern Cyclones and Kris Zapata of the EHL’S New Jersey 87’s announced their collegiate plans. Both are forwards.

Zapata, a 20-year-old forward from Voorhees, NJ, has played 26 regularseason games for the 87’s, recording three goals and 14 points.

“It was an exhilarating experience making the commitment official to a school that had everything I was looking for,” the 5-foot-9, 165-pound forward said in a release from the team. “It was exciting to see my goal come to fruition. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and want to thank my teammates and the coaching staff.”

Dunn, 19, is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward and native of Douglas who committed to the Falcons Wednesday, according to College Commitments. He’s played 23 games between the Northern Cyclone’s NCDC and EPL clubs and notched four helpers this season.

Right wing Jacob Trowt, a right wing playing for the Springfield Pics of the Uspl-premier, committed to the Falcons last month for the 202324 season.

Third-seeded Fitchburg State plays in a MASCAC tournament quarterfinal Saturday, welcoming No. 6 Salem State to the Wallace Civic Center for a 5 p.m. tilt. The winner of that contest will face second-seeded Worcester State in the semifinals Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Several games postponed

Fitchburg State’s baseball season was slated to open Saturday with a game against Colby- Sawyer at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro. Mother Nature, however, had other plans.

That game has been postponed with no make-up date announced. The Falcons are next scheduled to give it a go on Tuesday at Clark University before embarking on their annual Florida trip.

The FSU women’s lacrosse team

was scheduled to open its regular season at Regis on

Saturday, but that contest has been bumped to Monday at 3:30 p.m.

The Falcons schedule hasn’t been altered for softball. The team — with new head coach Dick Hurley

— doesn’t kick off its season until March 7 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, opening the spring with a 10-game road trip.

Victor hitting the ice

Former Fitchburg State defenseman Josh Victor has played in thee games for the ECHL’S Worcester Railers sine being traded to the team earlier this month. While the 6-foot- 4, 212-pound native of Round Rock, Texas, has yet to notch a point for Worcester, he’s picked up a pair of penalty minutes and is even in the plus/minus category.
