Sam Curtis belts homer in win over Lunenburg

The Oakmont Regional baseball team powered past Lunenburg High at Marshall Park on Monday, returning to Ashburnham with a 9-3 victory.

Sam Curtis lead the Spartans (2- 0, 1-1 Mid-wach C) with a pair of hits, including a homer, and drove in two. Ty Curtis chipped in with a pair of hits and an RBI in the victory.

Brett Richards notched a pair of hits and drove in two for the Blue Knights (1-2, 1-1). LEOMINSTER 4, METHUEN 1 >> Angel Baez struck out a dozen, allowing one run on two hits and three walks in six innings on the hill for the Blue Devils (2-1), while also driving in a run. Alex Coco worked a clean seventh to secure the win.

Dom Swaine had a pair of RBI and Zack Casey chipped in with a single run driven in. FITCHBURG 8, WATERTOWN 7 >> Sophomore Joelvys Fabian earned his first varsity victory, going six innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks, striking out seven. Albert Ascenio picked up the save, inducing a game- ending double play when Luis Lamboy snagged a line drive at short and flipped to Nyle Sim at second for the game’s final out.

Sim, Lamboy, Ascenio, Saul Zapata and Melvin Deleon each drove in a run in the win for Fitchburg (1- 4).

LOWELL CATHOLIC 5, NORTH MIDDLESEX 4 >> Ryan Arsenault and Cameron Haley each drove in a run for the Patriots (3-2) in defeat.

Softball

OAKMONT 16, LUNENBURG 1: J >> en Buszkiewic­z had three hits and drove in four, while Alison Hazel doubled twice and notched three RBI for the Spartans (2-0, 1-0 MidWach C).

Lilly Grebinar went 3-for- 3

with a double and RBI for Lunenburg (1-1, 1-1).

ST. BERNARD’S 8, MONTY TECH 4 >> Freshman Ariana Hirtle hit for the cycle in the win, belting her first varsity home run for the Bernardian­s (1-2).

College baseball

FITCHBURG STATE 9, WORCESTER STATE 4 >> Cole Duhaime had three RBI, Jacob Hurrell (2-for- 5, two runs) blasted a two-run homer and Joseph Abt drove in a pair to lead the Falcons (7-20, 2-8).

Jovanni Merced ( 1- 0) earned the win in relief, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out four.

Fitchburg native Michael Cooper had a two-run homer for Worcester State, plating Leominster High grad Tom Halliwell with the blast.

College softball

FALCONS SWEPT BY LANCERS >> Fitchburg State dropped both games of a doublehead­er to Worcester State, falling 5- 4 and 1- 0 in MASCAC action.

Trailing 2- 0 in the opener, Fitchburg State cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth as senior Dana Cisowski walked, moved to second and third on hits from freshman Jessica Mueller and junior Isabella Sousa (2-for-3) before senior Lauren Kirkconnel­l walked to bring in a run.

The Lancers drove the lead to 5-1 before the Falcons rallied in the seventh. Cisowski singling to left field to score senior Molly Grass, while Sousa walked with the bases loaded to plate senior Julia Gauvin before sophomore Adria Mckenzie (2-for- 4) followed with an RBI single to bring home Cisowski. Worcester State staved off a total meltdown, holding on for the win.

In the second game, Worcester State grabbed a 1- 0 lead in the bottom of the first and never relented. Fitchburg State (9-15, 4- 4 MASCAC) threatened in the top of the fourth when Cisowski and Sousa collected base hits to lead off the frame, but the Lancers worked out of the jam to escape.

Sousa went 2-for- 3 in the Game 2 loss, while Cisowski, Gauvin and senior Allison Pogorek each added a hit each for the Falcons.
