Naturally energizing brews without the jitters

Get a jolt without the jitters. That’s the promise behind the latest power brews, which contain natural pick-me-ups like red reishi, ashwagandha, maca powder, roasted chicory, or B vitamins—but no actual caffeine. These drinks energize you, “but they’re less likely to make you feel shaky or keep you up at night,” says Meg Jordan, Ph.D., the chair of integrative health studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Look for caffeine-free lattes on café menus, or mix your own using Element Herbal Coffee, which is made with roasted chicory and ashwagandha ($12, herbalelement.com).

MIDDLE GROUNDS Alternative drinks, like Four Sigmatic’s Mushroom Coffee Mix (from $15, us.foursigmatic.com), have half as much caffeine as a cup of java.
