SHELBY- Mayor Steven Schag went over the COVID-19 update for the city and also announced plans for trick or treat during Monday night’s regular city council meeting.

Regarding COVID-19, Schag explained two new cases had been reported on Monday. On Monday, there had been a total of 67 individuals who had tested positive for COVID-19 since March of this year. Of that cumulative number, 59 individuals have obtained recovered/resolved status.

“Talking to our nurse, that number will probably move to 60 tomorrow with a recovered/ resolved status. The health department is monitoring 7 active cases, five of which are home in quarantine and two are hospitalized. As it was reported, there has been one documented death in the city,” Schag said.

Councilman Garland Gates explained he had been approached by a resident inquiring about trick or treat in Shelby.

Schag stated trick or treat for Shelby would occur on Thursday, October 29 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

“If folks feel they can safely participate then they can turn their porch lights on and if they can’t then leave it off. If they feel they want to leave their children at home, that is perfectly fine. We are leaving it up to individuals to make those decisions,” Schag said.

Gates also asked Shelby Police Chief Lance Combs if anyone had submitted a parade permit for a Halloween parade.

Combs explained he had not received a parade permit for Halloween.

During Schag’s report, he presented a motion to confirm the appointment of Mary Durkin to the Shelby Historic Preservation Commission to fill an unexpired term ending December 31, 2021.

Following discussion, the motion to approve Durkin was approved.

Schag added on October 2,a conditional offer of employment letter was extended to a candidate for full time firefighter/medic with the Shelby Fire Department. Schag explained the letter had been signed by both parties and was moving forward.
