SHELBY — Shelby reported five more COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, bringing to 17 the number counted by the city during the pandemic.
News of the five coronavirus deaths — a daily record for Shelby — was included in a Jan. 6 email update from Shelby Mayor Steve Schag.
Names, ages and other circumstances involving the deaths were not released.
Shelby’s previous coronavirus deaths were reported on Sept. 29, Dec. 2, Dec. 3, Dec. 12, Dec. 16, Dec. 26, Dec. 29 when two were reported, Dec. 30 and Jan. 4 when three COVID-19 deaths were reported by Shelby.
Of the 17 overall deaths, three are from the general population and 14 from long-term care, Schag reported.
Also in the update, Schag said that five new COVID-19 cases had been reported by the Shelby City Health Department over the previous 48 hours. In addition, 11 recovered coronavirus cases were reported.
Schag said the department as of Jan. 6 was monitoring:
* 79 active cases (35 general population and 44 long-term care facility population)
* 75 individuals in quarantine (35 general population and 40 long-term care facility)
* 4 hospitalized patients, all from the longterm care facility population
“The department has documented a total of 591 individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak began in March,” Schag wrote. “Of that cumulative number, 495 individuals have attained recovered/resolved status.”
