400 unused COVID vaccines leave Shelby
SHELBY -- Shelby Mayor Steve Schag on Tuesday delivered 400 first-dose Moderna vaccines to the Mount Carmel Medical Group in Lewis Center, Ohio -- coronavirus shots that were not needed in Shelby.
“The demand had diminished to a point where we needed to reallocate them,” Mayor Schag reported in a written message.
The Ohio Department of Health facilitated this transfer of valuable vaccines, he said.
“My wife Sonjia and I were very happy to make the delivery,” Mayor Schag wrote, noting that the vaccines had arrived at 3:30 p.m. April 6 in Lewis Center, which is in Delaware County.
Schag noted that the city of Shelby had informed the Ohio Department of Health earlier that it did not need more vaccines.
“We were putting things on pause,” Schag said.
A day earlier, Schag had announced that the Shelby City Health Department would not be scheduling any new, first dose, COVID-19 vaccine clinics due to the current lack of demand.
“Please note we will be continuing and fulfilling our second dose clinics/ appointments that are already scheduled through the month of April,” Schag added in his Monday email announcing the change.
Shelby began administering vaccines on Jan. 19.
