Whippets capture second championship of spring

-

ONTARIO — The Shelby boys track captured their second championship of the spring by taking Thursday night’s Ontario Relays contested at Copeland Field at Niss Stadium.

The Whippets, behind three first-place finishes and five runner-up showings, totaled 131 points and edged out Mid Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Marion Harding with 123. Crestview was third in the eight school field with 119.

“Ontario is always a different meet as you have extra relays and only one person per running event. We had an up and down day, however, the best thing is we didn’t have any injuries,” said SHS boys coach Chris Zuercher. “We survived today. The weather wasn’t great at all, but we need these days to toughen us up.”

The Shelby trio of Xander Wilkins, Camden Walter and A.J. Cornette won the shot put relay with a combined throw of 116-2 1/4. Wilkins also had the best throw in the field of 44-1 1/2.

Adding to the Whippets first place total were Luke Dininger and Mason Hendrickson. Dininger swept the 1,600-meter run with 4:43.69 and Hendrickson ruled the 3,200-meter run with 10:21.24.

Earning seconds for the SHS boys were Marshall Moore in the 800-meter run, the 4 x 100 meter relay of Andre Hill, Carson Ingram, Brazure Roberts and Ian Finnegan, the 4 x 800-meter relay of

Huck Finnegan, Riley Fackler, Josh Mohr and Dinninger, the distance medley relay of Graeme Harvey, Mohr, Fackler and Huck Finnegan, and the high jump relay of Garrett Baker, Noah Rank and Issaiah Ramsey.

Mansfield Madison and Ontario were the top two teams in the girls field with 142.5 and 112 points, respectively. The Lady Whippets tied Galion for third place with 105.

“We tried to mix things up and spread out events across the team. The girls responded very well to the changes and we’re happy with how they performed today. They’re showing great diversity in their events,” said SHS girls coach Patience Lewis.

The Shelby foursome of Kailyn Schwall, Abby Vogt, Reyna Hoffman and Kayla Gonzales won the distance medley relay in a time of 13:56.84.

Alainah Carmel had the other first for the red and gray girls as she claimed the 300-meter low hurdles in 50.77.

Second place finishers for the girls were Tessa Slone in the 200-meter dash, Haylee Baker in the 400-meter dash, and the 4 x 200-meter relay of Kassie Stine, Ava Heimlich, Brittany Cundiff and Baker.

Stine had the top individual effort of 5-1 in the girls high jump.

Saturday the boys and girls will participate in the Mehock Relays in Mansfield. The red and gray will host Kenton in a dual meet Tuesday.
