SHELBY — The city of Shelby is putting the final administrative touches on a highprofile demolition project that was carried out along a major community corridor.

“The demolition work to the now former outbuildings south of the Light Plant is complete,” Shelby Municipal Utilities Director and Deputy Public Service Director John Ensman said in a written report and in remarks to City Council’s Utilities and Streets Committee on April 15.

He detailed that with the demolition project, two change orders were needed.

One change order was for $10,000 to excavate and dispose of several very large pieces of concrete foundation, Ensman reported.

Ensman told Shelby City Council’s Utilities and Streets Committee during its monthly meeting Feb. 11: “Numerous large sections of the foundation, the size of a small size car, was unearthed during the excavation work.”

“Additional work was required to assist with the unexpected excavation, break up, and disposal of extremely large sections of the concrete foundation from the former ice plant building,” Ensman also said at the time comments to committee.

At the April 15 meeting, Ensman stated that the second changeorder totaled $1,530 involving asbestos abatement.

In his presentation to the committee, Ensman specified the total costs for the project that was carried out this past winter.

The bid amount to demolish the outbuildings was $101,850, he

in the detailed.

When the two change-orders are included, the demolition project costs totaled $113,380, Ensman said in his presentation to the committee during the April 15 meeting.

Expenses were paid from Fund 602, which is the Light Debt Reserve, Ensman specified in his comments.

Legislation for the change orders was being prepared for presentation to

Shelby City Council.

An April 19 date was anticipated.

Page Demolition and Excavating of Lucas, Ohio led the effort to demolish the building structures at what also was known as the old drive-thru and ice plant building.

The site is at 36 Mansfield Ave., south of Main Street.

Last fall, Ensman described what was envisioned following demolition.
